Rhode Island – Ex-cop indicted on murder charge in shooting August 5, 2008 WARWICK, R.I.-A former Providence police officer has been indicted on a murder charge in the fatal shooting of a Cranston firefighter.A grand jury handed up an indictment Tuesday accusing 40-year-old Nicholas Gianquitti of murder and discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence. Prosecutors say Gianquitti shot James Pagano in their Cranston neighborhood on May 18. The men argued after children attending a birthday party at Pagano’s home batted a tennis ball into Gianquitti’s car. Gianquitti is currently being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions. A spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch said Gianquitti will be arraigned Friday morning in Providence Superior Court.

His attorney, William Devine, declined to comment on the facts of the case, but said the indictment is “only one side of the story.”
